Stochastic resonance and improvement by noise in optimal detection strategies

چکیده
A stochastic resonance effect, under the form of a noise-improved performance, is shown feasible for a whole range of optimal detection strategies, including Bayesian, minimum error-probability, Neyman–Pearson, and minimax detectors. In each case, situations are demonstrated where the performance of the optimal detector can be improved (locally) by raising the level of the noise. This is obtained with a nonlinear signal-noise mixture where a non-Gaussian noise acts on the phase of a periodic signal. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Noise Improvements in Stochastic Resonance: from Signal Amplification to Optimal Detection
It is demonstrated that benefits from the noise can be gained at various levels in stochastic resonance. Raising the noise can produce signal amplification as well as signal-tonoise ratio improvement, input–output gain exceeding unity in signal-to-noise ratio, and enhanced performance in optimal processing. This series of benefits is successively exhibited in the processing of a periodic signal...
متن کاملConstructive Action of Additive Noise in Optimal Detection
The optimal detection of a signal of known form hidden in additive white noise is examined in the framework of stochastic resonance and noise-aided information processing. Conditions are exhibited where the performance in the optimal detection increases when the level of the additive (non-Gaussian bimodal) noise is raised. On the additive signal–noise mixture, when a threshold quantization is p...
متن کاملFisher Information as a Metric of Locally Optimal Processing and Stochastic Resonance
The origins of Fisher information are in its use as a performance measure for parametric estimation. We augment this and show that the Fisher information can characterize the performance in several other significant signal processing operations. For processing of a weak signal in additive white noise, we demonstrate that the Fisher information determines (i) the maximum output signal-to-noise r...
متن کاملStochastic Resonance and Optimal Detection of Pulse Trains by Threshold Devices
Chapeau-Blondeau, François, Stochastic Resonance and Optimal Detection of Pulse Trains by Threshold Devices, Digital Signal Processing 9 (1999), 162–177. The nonlinear detection by a threshold device of a periodic train of soliton-like pulses embedded in arbitrarily distributed white noise is studied. A theoretical model is developed which provides expressions for the signal-to-noise ratio at t...
متن کاملStochastic resonance for an optimal detector with phase noise
A stochastic resonance e/ect, under the form of a noise-improved performance, is shown possible for an optimal detector. This is established with a nonlinear signal–noise mixture where the noise acts on the phase of a periodic signal. The optimal detector, achieving minimal probability of detection error, is explicitly derived. Conditions are exhibited where this minimal probability of error is...
